A student is confused about doing B Sc in agriculture—we help them

How does it help their career?

A student asked us about the scope of career growth and the career path options after doing BSc in Agriculture, from an Indian university. They knew of marketing as the only possible career and we had a discussion with them to explore the possibilities.

When a student asks about the scope of a particular stream or specialization in a college degree, it shows that they are clear about the direction.

There are unlimited categories of jobs or of finding their own independent work opportunities in agriculture—agritech, tools, soil analysis, climate impact, seeds science, food technology, farming dashboards, and many more.

The question is too broad to begin with and for Steering, it is easy to give them the list of career options, with links to a few colleges so that they can make a decision. However, it does not give them a chance to find out what exactly they want to do, for what kind of dreams and goals, and by applying what kind of skills.

In the process, it is important to build their confidence also. We shared a few references such as:

There are useful discussions on Reddit (example) but students should be careful to see different wider perspective when they read others’ stories and their advice.

In our discussion with this student, we wanted to build their capacity to think. It is not about the subjects or skills they want to learn, it is more about how they want to apply those skills and learnings in what kind of work. We invited them to use our service on a free trial, on this road to self-discovery, and we are in the middle of this journey and the analysis.

While doing one such analysis for another family, we helped them build bridges in their difference of opinion about the scope of agriculture engineering, here is a visual from our analysis.
