While speaking to different students, a few of them have a lot of clarity of what they want to but they do not see the career path options. We share an example of a student who is curious to know the career options and the choices of working in mental health category.
Question by a student: I want to study Psychology, and I want to work in mental health, either some consultancy or business, or I don’t have many ideas of its career. I am not sure of the careers options or the directions or path. Can Steering help?
Answer: Interesting, and this is such a good sign that you have some preference for what you want to study in college. Did you think what exactly you want to do in this category. For example:
Do you want to do actual counselling (in person or online), by speaking to people and helping them?
Do research for the causes of mental health
Or design tech products in mental health?Â
Or to help mental health researchers or counsellors to provide better services?Â
Or to design reports and dashboards for counsellors so that they can make more accurate services/reports/guidance?
The student: Well, yeah, but I am thinking.
Answer: There are more options but we do not want to give you a set of options. Our goal is to make you think, to build your capacity, to make you speak to yourself internally, in your own language. For example:
Do you want to work in policy for data privacy in mental health?
Also, mental health for any specific audience interests you more? For example for students, disabled people, or elders, influencers, sportspersons, drivers—all of them might have their own specific challenges and problem areas.
The student: I got it, I have some ideas and I will write these to think deeply.
Answer: There are so many reasons that you might need to understand, depending on what interests you more. For example your audience might be struggling to deal with with loss of someone. Or, the loss of business. Or, loss of pets.
When you compare different options and paths, do not forget to involve your family or siblings, or loved ones. They are an important part of the journey and your career shapes a lot of factors that make a happy family.
They might need services or support because of some fear or insecurity. Take an example of human consultants in corporate—the psychology of all employees and leaders to help them deal with workspace challenges. Students might have their own fears. People in relationships might have different stories.Â
The student: Well, this is interesting. I did not think about all these directions.
Answer: Also, think if you see a career and the rewards of working in mental health by using medicine? Or counselling? Or some form of therapy? By building some expertise in food and diet? Or something else, or a combination of these practices?
You may not have answers to all these questions—our job is to help you think broad and deep, so that you take your time.Â
Your preferences or choices might change during your college also, so some analysis will keep you prepared for those times.
Our analysis structure in the free plan helps you in thinking deeply about your life-dreams, aspirations, wishes, and in connecting the dots for what you want to do, what skills you should learn, how to apply those skills in real life work, and what brings joy in your life when you grow up.
