How Steering is about family first—for students’ careers, college, subjects, and aspirations

Students’ career choices and the family

When students get into a college and the whole family supports it, the family dynamics are different. When they study something against the parents’ wishes, it impacts everyone at home.

When a student grows from grade six to seven, the family is also growing. The child is merely progressing for the grades but the family is thinking of the possibilities—sometimes wondering about the kid’s interests, skills, and mental models.

As the kid enters grade nine or ten, the parents get into somewhat serious thinking—what next in the college? What subjects might be good for their kid, and for what kind of career, and life?

When the kid starts thinking of certain career options—it is about the whole family. Imagine that the students want to drop out of the college after the first year, or they want a career pivot—it is often a source of concern for the whole family. This is why college and career planning should be a holistic and family-centric experience where they respect each others’ concerns, opinions, boundaries, and find the right convergence points.

A student completing their degree and then doing some research in a lab, vs repairing cars in a workshop, vs designing dashboards for farmers, vs making shoes for the athletes, vs consulting with traders, vs doing software consultancy—kids bring that spirit of working by choice to their home. It influences their relationships with their parents, their own family, and their contacts and the network. It builds families.

It is true at least in some countries in the world if not everywhere.

Steering builds those bridges for the students and the families to invest in the foundations—and it does not need any special skill.

We believe in building confidence first by designing the right support structure for them. If a student had ever wished in their mind while going to sleep or while watching a reel—”I wish I could design better shoes for those athletes, or I wish our car dashboard had this feature...”, We give them this platform to express these wishes, and then find the path to those aspirations.

We put you on your life steering.

Steering is not a college-matching or college-finding exercise.

We help the students in their life-design journey—a path that builds your self-awareness and peripheral awareness to map what you are learning and how you will apply the learnings for your dreams.
